Tom Whiteaker is a Partner at IBM Ventures with over 20 years of experience as both a VC and CVC investor. Tom joined IBM in 2019 with the goal of getting IBM into the CVC game as an industry leading player.
Today, Tom and the IBM Ventures team are investing out of IBM’s newly launched $500M Enterprise AI fund, focusing on enterprise software companies in the areas of Data/AI, Cyber, Sustainability, Quantum and Automation.
Tom started his CVC career in 1999 at Visa during the dot-com boom to strategically invest for Visa in the internet revolution, ultimately leading Visa Ventures through Visa’s IPO. Visa Ventures was an early player in the CVC game and also an early investor in companies like Yahoo, Verisign, Nuance, Ariba and many other companies at the intersection of payments and the internet. Following Visa, Tom founded a $100M CVC program for The Hartford, a 200 year old insurance company looking to invest at the intersection of insurance and technology to drive insights for the future of their business. This fund was the first of many on the wave of InsureTech for the venture community. Following The Hartford, Tom became an Executive Managing Director at BBVA group where he co-founded BBVA Ventures and ultimately spun that out with his partners into a $250M single LP fund.
In addition to spending time with his family, Tom loves the outdoors and spends his limited free time golfing, flyfishing or skiing. He splits his time between the Bay Area and Colorado, having lived in the Bay area for the past 30 years.
